Earlham Echo - Thursday, January 6, 1944

December 27, marked the home going of a beautiful life now triumphant with Christ. For us her sun has gone down while it is yet day; for her it is the dawning. All is well; we are not alone. God stands by and we shall meet her in the morning.

Maude Burns, daughter of William and Paulina Burns was born at Redfield, Iowa, on November 13, 1879 and passed away at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines on December 27, 1943 at the age of 64 years, one month and 14 days.

Her early life was spent at Redfield where she attended the public schools. While yet a young girl she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Church of Christ at that place. On June 20, 1900 she was united in marriage to S. C. Welch of Dexter, to which union one daughter, Pauline, was born.

The first years of her married life was spent in Dexter, later moving to Earlham, which has since been her home. After coming to Earlham she united with the Methodist church of which she was a faithful member until her death; taking a part in its many activities. Whenever it was possible she attended Sunday School and the Woman's Society of Christian Service and did what she could to help promote the kingdom of Christ. A life like this does not end in death, although she rests from her labors, she still lives in the hearts and lives of those who loved her and among whom she labored.

For forty-three years and six months, Maude Welch has been a faithful loving companion caring for her home and dear ones. In that home--the inner circle, she loved her own well and unto the end. She was a mother in the truest sense. She did not stop with loving her own but had an ear open so that she could hear the cry of human need as is evidenced by the fact that she took a little motherless girl, now grown into young womanhood--Ila Linn--into her heart and home, giving her shelter and the love and devotion of a true mother.

She was a genial, happy and fun loving disposition, hospitable and charitable; never holding a grudge and has won a large place in the hearts and lives of those who knew her best.

She was prominent in the social as well as the religious life of the community. She was a member of the Earlham chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, of Marguerite Rebekah Lodge, The Three Link Club and The Study and Social Club.

Left to mourn her passing are her sorrowing husband, her daughter and husband, Pauline and Von Allen of Dexter, the foster daughter, Ila, at home, two sisters, Mrs. Mart Welch of Earlham, and Mrs. Alice Peterson of Detroit, Michigan, and other relatives and friends. Her father, mother, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

(Burial was in the Wiscotta cemetery, Redfield, Iowa)
