Ernest, son of William and Adeline Gowin Slavens, was born November 5, 1877, near Lincoln, Nebraska, and passed away at his home near Stuart, Iowa, Saturday morning at nine o'clock, November 18, 1944, at the age of 67 years and 13 days.

His parents remained in Nebraska for one year after Ernest was born, coming to Iowa for a time, then moving to Indiana, where he was reared and educated. As a youth of 13 years he began working as a farm hand, being thus employed for 12 years. On expiration of that period he moved to Adair county, Iowa, and started out as an agriculturist for himself, cultivating a rented tract of land near Stuart for two years, then moving near Earlham where he farmed for many years, the last years being spent of his farm west of Stuart.

On November 27, 1901, Mr. Slavens was united in marriage to Sarah A. Fry, of Stuart. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. Hazel Mullins of Winterset, and Mrs. Martha Barr of Stuart.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Sadie; two daughters, Hazel and Martha; two grandchildren, Lisle Mullins of Stuart, and Mrs. Marvel Sheriff of Orient; one great granddaughter, Jo Ann Mullins; four brothers, Oder of Plainfield, Indiana; Jesse of Crawfordsville, Indiana; Tide of Earlham, and Nitus of Adel. His parents, two brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death. He also leaves many relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.

In life Ernest was a quiet man, faithful and devoted to his home and family. A kind and loving husband, father and neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; also a member of the Order of Rebekahs of Stuart.

He was a man of many excellent qualities of character and his industry, integrity and ability have brought him a gratifying degree of prosperity in his home loving life.

Funeral services were held from the Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, November 21st, Rev. Reed Kessler in Charge. The Odd Fellows service was given.

Interment in Oak Grove cemetery, Stuart.
