OBITUARY
Nellie the youngest daughter of pioneer parents, William H. and Deborah Killmourne Fleming, was born in Madison county, Iowa, on January 11th, 1878. She completed grade school in Penn township and later attended Dexter Normal School.
She was married to Lester J. Hill on November 9th, 1900, and went to live on the farm that has been her home ever since. There her family, Frank, Bruce, Gladys and Howard were born and reared. There she spent her happy married life, till the death of Mr. Hill on November 11th, 1928. Constant in sickness as in health Nellie remained by her husband's bedside through his long illness and then returned to the farm with her children and continued her busy life.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years, an active and willing worker in its different departments, and served as one of the deaconesses of the church. She also belonged to the local Garden and Sorosis Clubs, and helped wherever she saw the need.
Yes her life was filled with many interests, but chief among them all was her family and home, and to them she gave a life of deepest devotion. In return she received the love and gratitude of her sons and tender and affectionate care from her daughter, Gladys Ross, who never left her mother through the weeks of serious illness. Gladly would her children have sacrificed to keep her here, but on Saturday, November 17th, 1945 after a life of sixty-seven years, ten months and six days she answered her Masters call and her earthly task was done. Her children rise up and call her blessed; they will cherish fond memories of their gentle mother.
Mrs. Hill's life was one of trustfullness, she accepted the trials as they came, not carelessly or indifferently but with a calm assurance that what God send is best and that He always cares for His children.
Three brothers survive, Ed of Oregon, Marion and John of Earlham. For some time John has shared the blessings of the Hill home and his helpful companionship meant much to them all. One sorrowing sister Jenny to whom Nellie was so dear and for whom Nellie was much concerned also survives. There were four other sisters, Mrs. Emma Butler, who died some years ago and Ida, Mary, and Verna who died in childhood. A brother-in-law Frank Junkin, two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Ed and Marion Fleming and two daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bruce and Howard Hill, a son-in-law Jesse E. Ross and six well beloved grandchildren and many nieces, nephews also remain and will miss her.
Few women have enjoyed a greater share of sincere friendship and esteem than was accorded Mrs. Hill be her neighbors and many, many friends, for to know her was to love her.
