Winterset, Iowa
Wednesday, December 9, 1942

Fred E. Neely, a native of Lorimor who fought through World War I as a member of Company A of Winterset, died at the Veteran's hospital in Des Moines Sunday. He had been seriously ill since last April. His illness was the result of wounds received in action in France. He was 47 years of age.

Mr. Neely was the son of Pinkney and Sarah Neely, and was born near Lorimor on April 4, 1895. All his early life was spent in that community. When war was declared in 1917 he immediately volunteered in Company A, which was a unit of the 168th Infantry regiment, and went overseas as a member of the Rainbow division. He served with his company until honorably discharged on June 23, 1919.

He was a salesman and member of the United Commercial travelers. Two years ago he became superintendent of gasoline and oil distribution at Ft. Leonard Wood, near Rollo, Mo. After the completion of that post, he was transferred to the ordnance plant at Ankeny in a similar capacity.

He is survived by his wife; his aged father, of Winterset; and eight sisters and brothers, as follows: Mrs. Charlie Gardner of Mingo, Mrs. Gertrude Smith of Lorimor; Frank Neely of SeSoto, Calif., Mrs. Eldon Wilson of Winterset, Ferol Neely of Alden, Mrs. Clark Watkins of Freeport, Ill., and Vera and Florence Neely of Winterset. His mother preceded him in death, Aug. 31, 1942; a sister, Mrs. Forrest Jordan, died in December, 1940, and a brother, Samuel Ernest, died a number of years ago.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday from the Dunn funeral home in Des Moines, by the Rev. Mr. Sansbury, pastor of the University Church of Christ, and burial was made in the Veteran's plot at the Glendale cemetery.
