George R. Stine was born in Kansas, May 10, 1891. He lived in Kansas until he was nine, then went with his parents to Montana. When he was sixteen years of age which was probably after the death of his father he left home and traveled for several years in the Western states, part of the time in California and Oregon. He then came to Minnesota to work and there enlisted as a private in the World War. He was a number of months in service and spent nine months in France. When the Armistice was signed he was returned to Camp Dodge for his discharge.
He worked for several years in Iowa and was married to Nettie Lippy McBride in June of 1926. To them one child was born, Shirley Joan, who was just over a year old when her mother died on July 6, 1929. Since that time Shirley has been cared for by her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Lippy.
In the past two years Mr. Stine has worked on different farms in the Tileville neighborhood.
When the quarry, near the Ross McNichols home, where he was staying, opened a short time ago, he begun working there. They were blasting on May 30 and a rock struck him in the face. He was first taken to the Winterset hospital and later to a hospital in Des Moines, where he passed away on June 2nd, 1931, at the age of 40 years and 24 days.
He leaves his three year old daughter, Shirley Joan, and it is thought that his mother is living and also a brother and a sister.
The Rev. W. C. Porter conducted the services at Tidrick’s Funeral home Thursday afternoon, June 4th and the burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
