Former Resident Is Killed In Airplane

Dr. Thomas C. Young, former Winterset resident, was instantly killed, Sunday afternoon, February 22, in an airplane accident near Chino, California. Dr. Young, who is a prominent Glendale physician, had been summoned to Chino, for a medical consultation. He was accompanied by Roy Wertz, 32 years of age, of Glendale. Dr. Young was at the control of the plane, when it crashed from an elevation of 1000 feet. Both men were dead in the wreck of the ship, when motorists, who witnessed the fatal dive, reached the plane.

Dr. Young was an experienced aviator, and had flown planes of his own for years. He held a government pilot’s license, and he and Mrs. Young flew back from California, here, a year ago last fall.

Dr. Young was born and raised in this county. He was a son of the late, Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Young. Some of his college work was taken in Des Moines, but he was graduated from the college of medicine in California. He was married to Miss Garnet Baird, also a Winterset resident, about twenty years ago, and they have since resided in California. The deceased was 44 years of age and was a successful physician and surgeon. He is survived by his wife, a brother, Sam Young, of Scott township, a brother, Dee Young of Des Moines, and a sister Mrs. Minnie Deal of Scranton.

Definite word as to the funeral arrangements had not been heard here, when the Madisonian went to press, Wednesday afternoon, but it was thought that the services were held Tuesday afternoon.
