Robert Hester, Earlham

Robert LeRoy Hester, 74, of Earlham (and winter resident of Florence, Ariz.) died March 13, 2005 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 19, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter with Pastor Luke Zimmerman officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery with military rites performed by Earlham American Legion Post 158.

Bob Hester was born May 9, 1930, in Dallas county to Russell and Hazel (Wetrich) Hester. He was a 1948 graduate of Earlham High School. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS Philippine Sea during the Korean War. After returning home from the war, he was employed by Martin Marietta Quarry. In 1962, he started farming in the Earlham area. He was united in marriage to Helen Marie Algreen on Jan. 26, 1956. Bob was a member of the American Legion and the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, where he served in various church positions. He also served on the Earlham School Board.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 19. 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, Iowa.

Pastor Luke Zimmerman officiated and Zelda Paullin was the organist.

Congregational hymns were “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Beautiful Savior”, and “How Great Thou Art”.

Pallbearers were Phillip Algreen, Chad Stiles, Alan Algreen, Corey Stiles, Paul Algreen, and Steven Gillette. Junion Pallbearers were Samuel Hester, Vance Peiffer, Gabriel Hester, and Carter Woollums.

Bob was born May 9, 1930 to Russell and Hazel (Wetrich) Hester on the family farm in Dallas County, Iowa. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1948. In 1950 he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Philippine Sea during the Korean War. After returning home from the war he was employed by Martin Marietta Quarry. In 1962 he started a life long career farming in the Earlham area.

January 26, 1956, Bob was joined in marriage to Helen Marie Algreen and they shared their lives for 49 years. To this union were born five children, Marty Marie, Joni Jean, Karla Kay, Robert Reid, and Lynn Linette.

Bob was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter in 1957 and served in various church positions. He was a member of the American Legion and served on the Earlham School Board. In his younger years he was an avid bowler and later enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends. He was a dedicated sports fan and followed the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed socializing with the local coffee group where he entertained them with his sense of humor and story telling.

The past nine years, Bob and Helen wintered in Florence, Arizona where they met many new friends and traveled in the area.

Bob always looked forward to special family gatherings where he could spend time with his children and grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents.

Bob will be missed but remembered by his wife, Helen and children Marty (Steve) Marker, Joni (Ed) Hopkins, Karla (Mark) Peiffer, Reid (Jennifer) Hester, Lynn (Rob) Woollums, grandsons Chad (Christine) Stiles, Corey (Candy) Stiles, Steven Gillette, Samuel and Gabriel Hester, Vance Peiffer, Carter Woollums; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Hunter and Casey; brother Harold (Jean) Hester; sister Zelda (Tom) Oblinger; brother-in-law (Billy (Sheila) Algreen; a niece, 8 nephews, 4 step-grandchildren, his good neighbors, and all his friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

Military graveside rites were held by Earlham American Legion Post 158. Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery in Earlham, Iowa.

Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
