ELMER L. POPE, Winterset

Elmer Lee Pope, 86, died of a stroke December 25, 1992, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Tues., Dec. 29 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Lisa Klein officiating. Burial was at Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Pope was born June 8, 1906, in Madison County to Leander and Lydia (Weeks) Pope. He farmed in Wisconsin, worked for Western Electric in Chicago, and during WWII he worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California. After his return to Iowa, he married Mary Powers on July 16, 1950 and began farming in Monroe Township. He was a member of the Farmer's Coop, Madison County Angus Association, Madison County Pork Producers, and was a lifetime member of the Madison County Historical Society. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers, Ira and Everett; and four sisters, Blanche, Pearle, Edna and Mabel.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Mary of Winterset; a daughter, Mary L. Strachan of Humbolt; a son, John Pope of Winterset; four grandchildren, Leia and Lee Pope, and Ryan and Sean Strachan.
