Jack E. Hern, 74, of Gilbertville, died of complications of cancer May 22, `1997 at Covenant Medical Center. Funeral services were May 27 at the Kerns, Huisman-Schmacher Chapel in Kimball. Burial was at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
He was born March 15, 1923 in Cedar Falls to William and Daisy Mae (Young) Hern. He married Vivian Miller on July 23, 1945 in Hiawatha, Kan. He was a professional truck driver for 40 years, retiring in 1982 from Jensen Transportation in Independence. He was a member of the St. Paul's United Presbyterian in Washburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son; two brothers, and one sister.
Surviving relatives include his wife of Gilbertville; two sons, Monty Hern ofThe Woodlands, Texas and Jack Hern II of Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Diane Walters of Kansas City, Kan., and Marvena 'Marti' Ryan of Waterloo; one brother, Charles Hern of Indianola; one sister, Velma Hendricks of Winterset; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family or the St. Paul's United Presbyterian Church in Washburn.
