Winterset Madisonian - July 10, 1918

James Elliott Weeks was born in Spencer county, Kentucky, Feb. 11, 1833 and died at his home in Macksburg, July 3, 1918, aged 85 years, 4 months, 28 days. When eight months old, with his parents, he removed to Illinois, where he grew to manhood and on March 16, 1854, was married to Miss Cornelia Pratt. To this union was born seven children, five of whom preceded him to that world beyond.

He came to Iowa in 1866 and two years later the newly erected home in the broad west which had been for some years a mere dream, but now a reality, was entered by the intruder of death and his devoted wife and companion taken.

His second marriage Dec. 16, 1869, was to Mary A. Johnson, who shared the joys and heart aches uncomplainingly, bearing with him the burdens of life faithfully to his life's end. There were seven children born to them, but two died in youth.

He is survived by his aged, sorrowing wife, two sons: T. E. and William by his first marriage, and who reside in Nebraska and the five daughters of his second marriage, who are: Mrs. Geo. Jickling of Winterset, Mrs. J. L. Emerson of Peru, Mrs. J. W. Rippey of Barney, Mrs. Geo. Wimmer of Bozeman, Mont., and Mrs. Chas. Bolton of Aynesworth, Nebr., besides many grandchildren and great grandchildren, he leaves a large host of friends who mourn his loss.

He was a life-long Methodist--not loud in his profession, but true, and without reproach in his living. Of him the church is proud and can point to his life with pride as a sacred heritage left her. How truly it can be said "A good man has gone."

The funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Methodist church, in the presence of a large concourse of friends who gathered to pay their last respects to one highly esteemed, conducted by Rev. G. T. Andrews. The remains were laid to rest in the Hamblin cemetery.
