Claude Harpole, former resident of Madison county, died this Tuesday, Oct. 12, at a hospital in Spirit Lake, where he had lived for many years. He was 63 years of age.
Mr. Harpole spent his early life in Penn township, after which the family moved to near Patterson where he lived while attending high school in Winterset. He graduated from Winterset High school with the class of 1921. He was an outstanding athlete during his high school career here.
For a time he was employed at the Anderson Funeral Home in Winterset and later at the Dunn Funeral home in Des Moines. Since 1944 he had operated the Harpole Funeral home in Spirit home in Spirit Lake.
He is survived by his wife; a son; a daughter; a grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Glen Hatfield of St. Charles.

Funeral services for Claude G. Harpole, 63, Spirit Lake funeral director who died suddenly Oct. 12 of a heart attack, were conducted last Saturday at the Methodist Church.
The Reverends Trevor Baskerville and Arthur Schuldt officiated and burial was in Lakeview Cemetery. Masonic rites were conduced at the graveside.
Pallbearers were Harold Reese and Fred Sternborg of Estherville; Phil Walton of Sibley; Cedric Thomas of Ringsted; John Jensen of Spirit Lake; and Gordon Sathe of Jackson, Minn. Paul Redington sand “The Lord Is My Shepherd” at the services.
Mr. Harpole, owner and operator of the funeral home in Spirit Lake since 1944 when he purchased the business, was highly active in church and civic affairs.
He was born July 5, 1902, in Madison county, the son of Gillette and Visa Sells Harpole. He was a graduate of Winterset high school, attended Montana university, Des Moines university, and Iowa State college before completion at the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo.
He served as athletic coach and science teacher at Ruthven, Paullina and Galva high schools.
Mr. Harpole and his wife Melvina, were married at Ames May 31, 1932. They resided at Galva while he taught there; at Winterset while with the Tidrick-Anderson Funeral Home, followed by employment at Hoffman Mortuary in Omaha and Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines just previous to purchase of the funeral home in Spirit Lake.
Mr. Harpole was a member of the Methodist church; past master of Twilight Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and Twilight Chapter No. 59, Order of the Eastern Star as past patron; was a charter member and past president of the Spirit Lake Kiwanis club and Key club committee member.
Giving of himself in community service for the benefit of his fellow citizens was always his high motive and concern. Loyalty to family and friends leave them a priceless heritage.
Mr. Harpole is survived by his wife, Melvina; a daughter Mrs. Don (Beverly) Gildemeister of Iowa City; one son, Mark, now residing in Saigon, Viet Nam; one grandchild.
Also, one sister Mrs. Glen Hatfield of St. Charles; three brothers, Eugene of Arcadia, Calif.; Frances of Colfax, Ill., and Charles of Huntington, Utah.
Those coming from a distance for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hatfield of St. Charles; Frances Harpole of Colfax, and Eugene Harpole of Arcadia, Calif.
