Mike Merrifield, 58, of Winterset died Sept. 19, 2005, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, Sept. 22, at Point of Grace Church, 305 NE Dartmoor Drive, Waukee, with Pastor Jason Stark officiating. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Sept. 21) from 5–8 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines with military rites performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.
Mike Merrifield was born Dec. 8, 1946, in Des Moines to Charles and Margaret “Peggy” (Baldwin) Merrifield. He graduated from Des Moines Tech High School in 1965, served in the United States Army and Navy during the Vietnam War and later attended Des Moines Area Community College and Wichita Area Community College in Wichita, Kan. On June 30, 1985, he married Barbara Eastman Watson in Des Moines.
Mike retired in 1985 as an aerial photographer and later worked for the United States Postal Service in Des Moines and the Veterans Administration in Wichita. His memberships included Paralyzed Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, Kansas Vietnam Veterans and Family Reunion Association. He also was a founding member of the Wichita Area Vietnam Vets.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Robert.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Winterset; his mother, Margaret, of Winterset; two daughters, Kristine Brown of Chesapeake, Va., and Amy Glas of West Des Moines; three sons, Tim Glas of Lincoln, Neb., Matt Glas of Lakewood and Steve Glas of Monroe; and seven grandchildren.
