George Edwin “Scoop” Goodson, 82, of Van Meter died Sept. 10, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Sept. 14) at the Van Meter United Methodist Church with burial at Van Meter Cemetery.
George Goodson was born Oct. 3, 1922, to William Marion and Florence Mertel (Smith) Goodson of Van Meter. Following the death of his parents, he was raised by his grandfather, Era Festus Goodson, and wife Rosa. After graduation from Van Meter High School, he joined the United States Army’s 207th Gas Supply Battalion, serving in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II and in occupied Japan. George had been a salesman for HyLine Chicks, co-owned and ran the Van Meter Grocery, did home remodeling and worked at Monarch Manufacturing. He was a member of the Van Meter American Legion.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Cuckie, Lucile Graves of Winterset, and two brothers, John Goodson and Robert Hanson.
He is survived by longtime friend, Philip Miles, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were handled by McCalley Funeral Home of Adel.
