JESSE RUSSELL SALSBURY, Patterson

Jesse Russell, son of Jesse and Rhoda Salsbury, was born in Iowa county, Iowa, Feb. 23, 1894, and died Somewhere in France, while serving with the American Expeditionary Forces, May 27, 1918, age 24 years, 3 months and 4 days.

He moved with his parents from Iowa county to Lorimor, where he resided for two years, then settled in Patterson, where he lived with his parents until he enlisted in the National Guard, June 24, 1916, and left July 20th for the Mexican border, where he served several months until called back and given his release. After war was declared with Germany, he again enlisted in the U.S. service and left for the fair grounds in Des Moines, on August 17, 1917, where he remained until Sept. 9th, then left for Camp Mills, where he remained until Nov. 14th, then he sailed for France.

Since that time he has been obeying the rules of the army and standing until the last, fighting for freedom and justice till the enemy overpowered him and God said "You have done your best, come up higher where peace and love reign." In all his letters he has written back he has shown nothing but the true American spirit; that he was only too glad he could do his bit for his country and at all times trying to assure the loved ones at home that he was well and hoped they were as well as he was. Could there be a more noble spirit manifested than this, and a more thoughtful boy to older people could not be than he, for he always had respect for them and wrote to them as freely as he did the younger ones.

He leaves to mourn his loss, father, mother, three brothers, James, Herbert and Lee and one sister, Mrs. Etta Shaklee; another sister, Adda, having preceded Russell to the beyond; and other relatives and many friends mourn the tragic death of our brother, Russell.
