DOROTHY YOUNG, Winterset

Dorothy Young, 98, of Winterset died June 29, 2006, at Winterset Care Center North.

A graveside service was held Monday, July 3, at Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg.

Dorothy Young was born Sept. 1, 1907, in Madison County to George and Myrtle (Edgington) Kirkland and was a 1925 graduate of Macksburg High School. On June 3, 1925, she married Chester Young. Dorothy, a farmwife and homemaker, was a member of the Winterset First United Methodist Church, Garden Club and Current Topic Club. She was a former member of the Macksburg United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Cleo Welling; a grandson, Jeffrey Welling; and seven siblings — Bernice Young, Harlan Kirkland, Grace Younkin, Worth Kirkland, Floyd Kirkland, Cleve Kirkland and Ralph Kirkland.

She is survived by one son, George Young of Paonia, Colo.; four daughters, Darlene Eivins of Colorado Springs, Colo., Beverly Basham of Bristol, Tenn.; Bette Thompson of Bolivar, Mo., and Evelyn Pearson of Knoxville; and 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Macksburg United Methodist Church.

Dorothy was born September 1, 1907 in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Myrtle (Edgington) Kirkland. She was a 1925 graduate of Macksburg High School and later married Chester Young on June 3, 1925. Dorothy died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the Winterset Care Center North in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chester in 1976; a daughter, Cleo Welling (Dick); a daughter-in-law, Alice Young; a grandson Jeffrey Welling; and her seven siblings, Bernice Young, Harlan Kirkland, Grace Younkin, Worth Kirkland, Floyd Kirkland, Cleve Kirkland, and Ralph Kirkland.

Dorothy was a farmwife and homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset and formerly was a member of United Methodist Church of Macksburg. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Current Topic Club. Dorothy was an excellent cook. She loved flowers and was good at flower arranging. She also enjoyed china painting.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, George Young of Paonia, CO, Darlene Eivins (Earl) of Colorado Springs, CO, Beverly Basham (Gene) of Bristol, TN, Evelyn Pearson (Jipe) of Knoxville, IA, and Bette Thompson (John) of Bolivar, MO; 17 grandchildren, Mary, Gwen, Judy, Jill, Steven, Susan, Bruce, Brian, Lori, Danny, Robin, Diane, Shelley, Sharla, Melanie, Scott, and Michael; 27 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
