Death of Ernest Travis

Ernest Waldon Travis, a life long resident of this county, died at the state hospital in Clarinda, Thursday, February 5th, after an extended illness. Mr. Travis, who was 57 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Travis, and was born, September 26, 1873, at Peru. His early life was spent on the farm, homesteaded by his grandfather. In 1899 he moved to a farm east of Winterset, where he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, J. A. Cox. In 1903 he began carrying the mail on a rural mail route from Winterset, and remained in the service, until in 1925.

Mr. Travis was married to Grace Campbell on March 15, 1905, and they were the parents of six children: Glenn, Mary, Ruth, Ralph, Eloise and Ernest Junior. One son, Ralph died on July 14, 1924.

Mr. Travis was a member of the Masonic lodge. He became ill about a year ago, and several months ago, was taken to Clarinda, for treatment.

Mr. Travis is survived by his wife, and five children, his mother, Mrs. W. M. Travis, one brother, W. D. Travis of Newark, New Jersey, and eight sisters: Mrs. J. A. Cox of Korbel, California; Mrs. J. W. Kellar of Waukasha, Wisconsin; Mrs. H. B. Wise of Martensdale; Mrs. H. H. Preston of Newark, New Jersey; Mrs. A. L. Pennebaker of Sharpsburg,, Mrs. N. E. Hollen and Mrs. J. R. Sawyer of Winterset, and Mrs. Lloyd Sprinkle of Detroit.

The Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Church of Christ, conducted the funeral services, held Sunday, February 8th, at 3 o’clock at the church and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Mr. Olmstead was assisted by Rev. A. P. Keast.

Ernest Waldon Travis

Ernest Waldon Travis, son of William M. and Mary E. Travis, was born Sept. 26, 1873, at Peru, and passed away on February 5, 1931, at the age of 57 years, 4 months and 10 days.

His early life was spent near Peru, living most of the time on the farm, homesteaded by his grandfather.

In 1899 he moved to a farm east of Winterset, where he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, J. A. Cox, afterwards moving to Winterset, which remained his home.

On March 15th, 1905, he was married to Grace Campbell. To this union were born six children, Glenn, Mary, Ruth, Ralph, Eloise and Ernest Junior.

One son, Ralph, died on July 14, 1924.

In 1903 he began carrying the mail on one of the first rural mail routes from Winterset. He remained in the service until 1925.

He was converted during the winter of 1912, but made no church affiliation. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge from 1914 until the time of his death.

His life was a beautiful example of unselfishness, only thinking of the happiness of the ones he loved, old and young alike, feeling his kindly interest.

Besides his wife and children he is survived by one son-in-law, C. L. Walton, one little granddaughter, Dorothy Mae Taylor, his mother, Mrs. W. M. Travis, his brother, W. D. Travis, of Newark, N. J., Mrs. J. A. Cox of Korbel, California, Mrs. J. W. Kellar of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Mrs. H. B. Wise of Martensdale, Mrs. H. H. Preston of Newark, New Jersey, Mrs. A. L. Pennebaker of Sharpsburg, Mrs. N. E. Hollen of Winterset, Mrs. Lloyd Sprinkle of Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. J. R. Sawyer of Winterset, besides a host of relatives and friends who will sadly miss him.

Service was conducted by Rev. Herman L. Olmstead, pastor of the Church of Christ, at 3:00 Sunday assisted by Rev. A. P. Keast.
