Ernest Mueller, 71, died Sept. 28, in LeMars, Ia. Memorial services were held in LeMars and at the Winterset Methodist Church, with burial in Jefferson Township Cemetery, Oct. 3.

Mr. Mueller, a long-time resident of LeMars, was born November 25, 1917, on the family farm northeast of Winterset, the son of Ernest and Georgia Mueller. He was an outstanding athlete in high school, playing all four years on the football team at Winterset. He attended Iowa State at Ames, leaving one quarter before graduation to serve in the U.S. Army from January, 1942 until 1946. He was company commander of an ambulance company in North Africa and Italy and attained the rank of first lieutenant.

He married Dorothy Carnes-Shivvers on June 5, 1942, at Knoxville. They are the parents of three children: Bill, Maribeth Trueblood, and Loriann Erickson.

Mr. Mueller farmed for many years and was later in the feed business, moving to LeMars, where he was manager of Select Feeds for nine years, retiring in 1985.

While a student at Iowa State, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity and played left guard on the renowned champion 1938 football team. He remained active in the Iowa State Alumni Association all his life.

In LeMars, he was active in the Rotary Club and Toastmasters. He served as chairman of the annual cancer drives for ten years as well as being active in many other community organizations. Many people remember him for his market news broadcasts on station KLAM.

Mr. Mueller was active at the LeMars First Methodist Church, serving as President of the Methodist Men, as lay leader, and was three times delegate to the annual conference.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Merl. Survivors are his wife, Dorothy, of LeMars, son Bill of Perry, and daughters, Maribeth Trueblood of Geneva, Ill. and Loriann Erickson of St. Charles, Ill., and four grandsons. He is also survived by sisters, Gretchen Casper, Winterset, Emma Chaffee, Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Etta Frink, Yuba City, Ca. One brother, George Mueller, lives in rural Van Meter, Iowa.
