Newton Lane, one of our most respected citizens and neighbors, passed away at his home in Lee township on Monday evening, March 26th. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. Mr. Lane had been in poor health for several months, although his condition was not serious until a week or ten days before his death, when he became worse, unable to lie down for several days, he sat in a chair until Saturday evening, when he took to his bed, from which he never arose only to arise in the beautiful Beyond, for as Jesus said “In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you, Fear not, I go to prepare a place for you.”
Mr. Lane was born in Washington county, Indiana June 27, 1840, and came to Iowa with his parents in 1851, locating in Boone township, Dallas County. After the death of his parents, he remained at the old Lane homestead until 32 years ago, when he sold the old home in Boone township and bought land in Lee township, Madison county, where he resided at the time of his death.
Mr. Lane was the youngest and only surviving one of five children. On Oct. 15, 1865, Mr. Lane was united in marriage to Josephine Huston, and on Oct. 15, 1915, Mr. and Mrs. Lane celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Lane or Newt, as many called him, had a wide acquaintance and many will be grieved to hear of his death for he has been a good and kind neighbor to everyone and we will greatly feel the loss of such a neighbor, for he was always honest and straightforward in all his dealings with his fellow men. He was also a devoted husband and father and the family will keenly feel the loss of this devoted one from the home.
Those left to mourn him are his wife and four children: Mrs. Alice Hiatt of Commerce; Anna Lane Jamison, also of Commerce; Elda and Roy Lane of Booneville and four grandchildren: Bernice and Josephine Hiatt and Mary and Lawrence Lane. Mr. Lane was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon, March 28th, at the Booneville cemetery. The family has the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
