Philip D. Grout, 75, of Newton, died Dec. 3, 1994 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services were today, Wed. at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Todd Schlitter officiating. Burial was at the Newton Union Cemetery.
He was born May 8, 1919 in Winterset to Fremont DeLoss and Beulah (Blosser) Grout. He married Bette A. Thoren on Dec. 23, 1945 in Missouri Valley. He graduated from Winterset High School and Central College in Pella. He did graduate work at the University of Iowa and at Drake University.
He was a teacher at Newton High School. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Newton Elks Lodge; 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge; past president of the noon Rotary Club; Past president of the Newton Board of Realtors; Charter member of the Newton Community Theater; critic for the Maytag Speech Club for 25 years; board member of the committee to build the Newton Community Center; and he served on the committee to build the Jasper County Museum. He was a partner in Wilson-O'Brien-Grout Inc., a real estate and insurance company.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving relatives include his wife; one son, Jamie Grout of Waterloo; and one daughter, Deborah Grout of Portland, Ore.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Newton Community Theater and the Masonic Scholarship Fund.
