Passing of Pioneer Woman Recalls Clayton County Settlement Here
Mrs. Rufus Hazen, for many years a resident of Jefferson township, this county, died on Monday, June 1st, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Crittenden, near Hopeville, Iowa, where she had been making her home since last fall. Burial was made Wednesday at the Jerusalem cemetery northeast of Creston, where Mrs. Hazen had made her home for some years with other of her children.
Mrs. Hazen's death recalls the early settlement made in this county by emigrants from Clayton county. The first Clayton county emigrant to Madison county was John Wragg, who settled in Grand River township in 1863. The following year, he moved near Waukee and the Wragg nursery was later established by his sons. Daniel Hazen also came in 1863 from Clayton county, bought land the year following and was soon followed by three brothers: Emerous, Rufus and Emerson, the last named locating in Lee township.
The Clayton county settlement was the first setllement made in Madison county by Iowa people. Prior to that time, the various settlements had been by people of other states, such as the Ohio colony in Ohio township and the Kentucky colony that settled along Hoosier Prairie and south of Patterson.
The Clayton county settlement left considerable impress on the affairs of the county. Several of this colony became prominent in the affairs of Madison county, among them C. C. Goodale, D. C. Wright, Merrill Knight and John Brooker, all of whom served as county officers.
