MARY BORTELL, Florida

Mary McKowen Bortell, 86, died of heart failure Sept. 25, 2003, at the Mariner Health Care Center in Inverness, Fla.

Memorial services were held Monday, Sept. 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Inverness, with urn placement in Iowa at a later date.

Mary Bortell was born in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1936. In May of 1939, she was united in marriage to Glen Bortell. In 1961, they co-founded Bortell's Ranch near St. Charles. In 1984, they moved to Venice, Fla., and to Inverness in 1992. Mary was a member of Eastern Star, PEO, Wakonda Christian Church (charter member) and Inverness First United Methodist Church. She also had supported her family's interest in horses as a member of The Flying Hoofs Drill Team and Za Ga Zig Shrine Mounted Patrol.

She is survived by her husband, Glen Bortell of Inverness, Fla.; a daugher, Glenda Ackley of Kalispell, Mont.; two sons, Bill Bortell of Winterset and John Bortell; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
