1962Well-Known Resident of This Community Was 87 Years of Age
Mrs. Charles A. Graves, a well-known Winterset resident since 1934, died Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Madison county Memorial hospital here. She was 87 years of age.
Mrs. Graves was the widow of Charles A. Graves, a Winterset merchant for many years.
She was the former Bertha E. Manatt, daughter of John P. and Mary E. Price Manatt, and was born in Brooklyn on Nov. 2, 1874. Much of her early life was spent in Perry, where she was married, Sept. 14, 1897 to William H. Brown. His death occurred April 1, 1900.
She was married to Charles A. Graves at Perry on Oct. 10, 1904 on Oct. 10, 1904, and he preceded her in death in 1954.
She had been a member of the P.E.O. for more than half a century. Her church membership here was with the First United Presbyterian.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Martha E. Jenkins of Perry; a son, Donald H. Graves of Winterset; four grandchildren, James W. Foster of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. James Haas of Perry, Mrs. Michael Tiernan of Carroll and Kirk C. Graves of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Clara E. Nelson of Redlands, Calif., a brother, Jay P. Manatt of Brooklyn and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. from the First United Presbyterian church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John E. Fink. Burial was made in Violet Hill cemetery in Perry.
