Winterset Madisonian - November 18, 1970

Ross Rhoads of Winterset, a well-known Madison county retired farmer, died Friday, Nov. 13, at Veterans hospital in Des Moines. He was 79 years of age.

Mr. Rhoads was born in Lincoln township April 30, 1891, a son of Samuel and Eliza Rhoads. As a young man he served in the 42nd, Infantry division of the U.S. army, known as the Rainbow division for two years during World War I. He participated in the battles of Chateau Thierry, Argonne and Metz on the western front in France.

Mr. Rhoads was married Nov. 28, 1933 to Anna Hartfield of St. Charles.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Lester Rhoads of Winterset; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Rhoads of Winterset. He was preceded in death by an infant son, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Eldon E. Jandebeur, pastor of the First Christian church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with military honors by Green-Rogers post of the American Legion.
