Winterset Madisonian - February 24, 1971

Maurice E. Read, a Madison county resident most of his life, died Thursday, Feb. 18, at Veterans hospital in Omaha. He was 51 years of age.

Mr. Read was born near Peru Aug. 10, 1919, a son of Asachel and Edith Scott Read. As a young man he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from January, 1943, until November, 1945. He was a member of the Winterset V.F.W. post.

Mr. Read was married at Waynesville, Mo., on Feb. 20, 1944 (date hard to read) to Doris Palmer, who survives him.

He had been employed by the Iowa Power and Light company for 23 years as truck driver and groundman for a tree crew. He had moved from Winterset to Council Bluffs in 1968.

He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist church of Council Bluffs.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son Dennis Read of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Dewey Gorham of Council Bluffs; his mother, Mrs. Edith Read of Winterset; two grandchildren; two brothers, Dwight Read and Nelson Read of Winterset; and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Young of Truro and Mrs. Jessie Young of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. James V. Paulsen of Council Bluffs. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with military honors at the graveside by the Winterset post of the Veterans of Foreight Wars.
