Death of Harley Goode At Age 88

Harley Henry Goode, the son of James Joseph and Mary Jane Keller Goode, was born June 20, 1889, near Milo, Iowa, and died Tuesday, May 9, 1978, at Memorial Hospital. He was 88 years of age.

Mr. Goode was the last of a family of nine children. He was married on December 22, 1909, to Malvern Lewis in Carlisle, Iowa. she preceded him in death on October 19, 1960.

A veteran of World War I, Mr. Goode was bulk agent for Mobil Oil Company in Madison and Warren counties and served as Madison County deputy sheriff. During World War II, he worked at the Des Moines ordinance plant. After retirement in 1953, he lived in Winterset. He was a charter member of the Winterset VFW.

Mr. Goode was preceded in death by his wife, Malvern, his father and mother, brothers, Frank, Clarence, John, Elmer and Charley; three sisters, Sena May Goode, Dollie Conklin and Tillie Emery. He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nellie Goode of Pleasantville, Iowa and Mrs. Katheryn Lewis of Carlisle, Iowa.

Mr. Goode was affiliated with the Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m. from First United Methodist Church in Winterset, Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery with military graveside services.

Harley H. Goode

Harley Henry Goode, son of James Joseph and Mary Jane Keller Goode, was born June 20, 1889 near Milo and died May 9, 1978, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

He was 88 years of age, the last o a family of nine children.

He was married on Dec. 22, 1909, to Malvern Lewis of Carlisle. She preceded him in death Oct. 19, 1960.

As a young man he farmed in the Warren County area and also barbered with his brother, Frank, in Indianola for several years.

He served in Europe during World War I. Later he was bulk agent for Mboil Oil company in Warren and Madison Counties. He served as deputy sheriff in Madison County for some time and during World War II worked at the Des Moines Ordinance plant.

Later he was road construction inspector in Madison County. He was injured in a ditch cave in in 1953 and forced to retire.

He was a charter member of the Winterset Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was affiliated with First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Frank, Clarence, John, Elmer and Charley; three sisters, Sena May Goode, Dollie Conklin and Tillie Emery.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nellie Goode of Pleasantville and Mrs. Catherine Lewis of Carlisle; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted May 12 from First United Methodist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Byron Ayers and Kenneth Helmers officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery with military graveside services.
