Leona Williams

There is no death! The stars go down
To rise upon some fairer shore;
And bright, in heavens jeweled crown
They shine for everymore.

Those who know and love Leona Williams will always think of her as living. Yet her passing brings a sense of great loss not only to her family and friends but to the entire community of which she was so much a part.

Leona Hightower Williams daughter of Samuel M. and Elizabeth Smith Hightower was born June 17th, 1867 on a farm just east of Earlham where she grew to womanhood. On October 31, 1888 she was married to Thomas E. Williams and they established a home north of town where they have lived continuously and richly for the past fifty-seven years.

God gave her a kingdom rich,
A relm so wonderous fair,
Her home where sweet contentment dwelt
For love and peace where there.

To this union were born two children Elsie who resides at home and Dr. Kenneth E. who is a dentist in Des Moines.

Devotion, better than any other single word, characterized the life of Leona Williams. Devotion was shown in her loving thought for her invalid mother and in her tender care of Mr. Williams' aged father who for years made his home with them. She was devoted to her family, her friends, her church, her clubs and her community. Her life was an inspiration to all. Few people have lived a fuller or more consistent Christian Life. She was a birthright member of the Friends Church and a charter member of the Earlham Chautauqua Club.

After a lingering illness of several months, during which she received the tender care of those who loved her, she quietly passed away at her home on the afternoon of January 21, 1946. Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her two sisters, Mrs. Clara Thompson and Alice Hightower and one brother, Clyde W. Hightower, all of Glendora, California, several nieces and nephews and very many friends.
