Death of John Gentry

John Gentry, for 20 years a teacher in the public schools of Winterset, died at his farm home near Valley Junction July 17 following a stroke of paralysis. He was 68 years old.

Mr. Gentry was well known here, leaving in 1919 to take up farming after retiring from teaching school. He leaves three brothers and four sister. They are Byron of St. Charles, Frank of Norwalk, and Mack of Winterset and Mrs. Henderson Farris of Atwood, Colorado, Mrs. Belle Palmer of Ottawa, Illinois, Miss Sylvia Gentry of Winterset and Mrs. A. P. Stickler of Altoona.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Winterset Sunday. The Rev. Sherman B. Moore of Valley Junction was in charge. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

John Gentry

John Gentry, son of W. W. and Eleanor Jane Gentry, was born at Winterset, Iowa, July 30, 1886, and passed away at his home near Valley Junction July 17, 1935, at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 17 days.

He grew to manhood on a farm in Union township, Madison county and resided in that vicinity until March 1, 1919, when he moved to his present home near Valley Junction.

He was a teacher of ability and understanding for twenty years, teaching in the community in and around Patterson, Iowa. He was principal of North Ward school in Winterset. He served two years as County Superintendent of schools in Madison county.

He has been a member of Odd Fellows lodge for thirty years.

Mr. Gentry was a man of sterling character and reputation, honest, ambitious and courteous.

He leaves four sisters and three brothers. They are: Mrs. H. E. Farris of Atwood, Colorado; Byron of St. Charles, Iowa; Mrs. Belle Palmer of Ottawa, Illinois; Frank of Norwalk, Iowa; Sylvia Gentry of Winterset, Iowa; Mrs. A. P. Stickler of Altoona, Iowa; Mac of Winterset, Iowa, also several nieces, nephews and friends.
