Cecil Gates, St. Charles

Cecil Oren Gates, 88, of St. Charles died Sept. 8, 2003, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 10 at St. Charles Parish Church with the Rev. Darold Snow officiating. Burial was at St. Charles cemetery.

Cecil Gates was born July 22, 1915 to Milton Terry and Sarah Elizabeth (Myers) Gates of Lewis. On May 14, 1973, he married Jessie Bernice Daniels in Winterset. Following their marriage, they made their home in St. Charles where they owned and operated a restaurant for four and one-half years. Cecil, a World War II veteran of the United States Army, was a member of American Legion Post 281 of New Virginia. He also was a member of the Menlo United Methodist Church and an active participant of St. Charles Parish Church. Over the years, he also was a foster parent to 14 children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Pearl Gates; and two sisters, Velma Burns and Hazel Stetzel.

He is survived by his wife, J. Bernice of St. Charles; five sons, Jack Daniels, Claude Daniels, and Ed Daniels, all of St. Charles, Larry Daniels of Des Moines and Art Daniels of New Virginia; three daughters, Julie Daniels of St. Charles, Joyce Daniels of Iowa City and Bea Gracey of Norwalk; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
