Dr. H. U. Garrett of St. Charles, Iowa state veterinarian for the past 10 years, died Tuesday night in a Des Moines hospital, following a heart attack. He was 64 years of age. He had been a patient at the hospital the past two weeks, as result of a heart condition.
Doctor Garrett had pacticed veterinary medicine in St. Charles from 1917 until 1947, when he accepted the state position.

Funeral services Friday for Prominent Resident of St. Charles
Funeral services were held last Friday in Des Moines and in St. Charles for Dr. Harley U. Garrett of St. Charles, whose death occurred in Des Moines Tuesday, April 2, following a heart attack. Prayer services were held from the Hamilton Funeral home in Des Moines at 10 a.m. followed by full services from the St. Charles United Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Burial was made in the Macksburg cemetery.
Doctor Garrett was 64 years of age. He was born in Clarke county Sept. 11, 1892, a son of Charles R. and Catherine McGuire Garrett. His early life was spent in Macksburg, where he graduated from high school. His education in veterinary medicine was completed in 1914 at Kansas City Veterinary college and immediately after that he started practicing his profession at St. Charles. He was in general practice there for 32 years until receiving appointment as Iowa state veterinarian in 1947. He held that position until his death.
Doctor Garrett was a member of Westminister United Presbyterian church and the Izaak Walton league in Des Moines. At St. Charles he was a member of the Lions club. His professional affiliations included the Central Iowa Veterinary Medical association of which he was past president; the Iowa Veterinary Medical association in which he held life membership; the American Veterinary Medical association; and the United States Livestock Sanitary association of which he served as vice president. He was also a member of the national board of veterinary examiners and the national research council of the U. S. department of agriculture; and served as a director of the Farmers and Merchants State bank of Winterset.
He is survived by his wife, the former Floye Beard; by two sons Kenneth Garrett of Colfax and Doyle Garrett of Northridge, California; a daughter, Mrs. Nadine Kunz of Minneapolis, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.

Dr. Harley U. Garrett, 64, state veterinarian, died of a heart ailment Tuesday night at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. He was hospitalized two weeks ago after suffering a heart attack at his home.
Dr. Garrett, of 2016 Thirty-fifth st., was appointed state veterinarian in September, 1947. Born on a farm near Macksburg, he practiced at St. Charles in Madison county for 35 years until his “retirement” in 1946.
He was graduated from Kansas City Veterinary College in 1917 and went immediately to the St. Charles job. The year after his retirement there he was appointed state veterinarian.
Work Praised
Secretary of Agriculture Clyde Spry said Dr. Garrett was chiefly responsible for stamping out the 1953 attack of vesicular exanthema, a highly contagious swine disease. Spry also credited Dr. Garrett with improved control of brucellosis, a cattle disease.
Dr. Garrett was vice-president of the United States Livestock Sanitary Association, and member of the National Veterinary Examining Board and Advisory Committee of the United States Department of Agriculture.
Wife Survives
He was a member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church here and the Lions Club of St. Charles.
Survivors include his wife Floye; two sons, Doyle, Northridge Cal., and Kenneth, Colfax, and a daughter, Mrs. Nadine Kunz, Minneapolis, Minn.

Doctor Garrett was born near Macksburg and practiced at St. Charles in Madison county for 35 years prior to his appointment.
Clyde Spry, secretary of agriculture, said Doctor Garrett played a prime role in stamping out the 1953 outbreak of vesicular exanthema, a swine disease. He also was know for his work on brucellosis, a cattle disease.
