CAR CRASH FATAL TO BRAD WHITE

One of the most tragic highway accidents of recent years last Friday night brought death to one member of this year's graduating class at Winterset High School and injuries to three of his classmates. Fatally injured in the crash of his car near Cameron, Missouri was Brad White, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. White who live northeast of Patterson.

The accident occurred when the car, which was being driven by Jerry Drake of Winterset, either blew a tire or lost compression rapidly. That threw the vehicle out of control and it rolled, throwing all four passengers out.

White received fatal injuries and died in the hospital at Cameron shortly later. The other three occupants of the car all were member of the graduating class of 1973 also. They were: Jeff Farr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Farr of Winterset. He received shattered bones in his thigh and hip and was transferred to a Des Moines hospital for treatment.

Jerry Thornburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thornburg of Patterson. He received a neck injury and multiple cuts and bruises.

Jerry Drake, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Drake of near Winterset. He escaped with loss of some teeth and multiple cuts and bruises.

Bradley Ray White was a native of Des Moines where he was born September 8, 1954, a son of Robert J. and Vera Davis White. The family had lived in Madison County the last 11 years and he attended the Winterset schools.

During his high school career here he was an outstanding athlete, lettering three straight years in both football and wrestling. He was honored by his teammates in being elected co-captain of the 1972 Husky football team and he reached the state tournament in wrestling. There he won three of his four matches, finishing fifth in the state in the 155 pound class. This is the highest any Winterset wrestler ever has placed in the state event. In addition, he was selected for All-South Central Conference honors in football during his junior and senior years.

The young man is survived by his parents and by three brothers, Bruce, David and Marty, all at home.

Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Charles Updike, pastor of the Winterset Foursquare Church. Burial was made in the Montpelier Cemetery near Patterson.

A Brad White Memorial Fund is being established by the athletic department of Winterset High School, to which contributions may be made.
