James Funk Dead

James Funk, veteran of the Civil War, for many years a resident of Winterset, died in the hospital in Clarinda. His death is greatly regretted in Winterset where he lived so long and where he had many warm friends.

Mr. Funk was married in Winterset to Miss Angeline Jacobs, daughter of an old Winterset family. They had two sons, one of them surviving.

While he lived in Winterset, Mr. Funk ran a blacksmith shop with his brother, Scott.

He moved to Des Moines several years ago where he was given a position in the state house, which he held until ill health in November required that he be sent to the hospital.

Death of J. H. Funk
An old time and widely known Winteset man died on Monday morning, Feb. 2, in Clarinda, in the person of James H. Funk. He had been suffering, physically and mentally for several months, so that his recovery was deemed very improbable. His mind cleared to a great extent before his death but at his age, his physical condition could not be permanently bettered.

Mr. Funk came to Winterset from Nevada, Ohio, in 1879, and continued to live here until he was made a custodian at the state house several years ago. He followed his trade as blacksmith for the greater part of his life. Nature had given him a sweet tenor voice, which brought him in touch with the musical people of Winterset for many years. His jovial disposition won him friends everywhere.

His war record was unusual, as it consisted of service throughout the war, as a drummer boy. Entering the army as a runaway boy of about 12 years, Mr. Funk was a veteran of many battles.

The death of his older son, Harry, from flu-pneumonia, a year ago, was a great shock, from which time he began to fail.

Mrs. Funk and her son, Guy, survive him and the deep sympathy of many friends goes out to them.

Funeral services will be held in Ramsey’s undertaking parlors tomorrow (Friday) morning, at ten o’clock with Dr. J.S. Corkey conducting.
