Wife and Two Children in Car Escape With Minor Injuries
Raymond Harold Baker, age 45, of St. Charles, early Wednesday morning became Madison county's first motor vehicle fatality of the new year.
Baker was killed instantly when a car he was driving skidded on ice and turned over in a grader ditch, about two miles north of Winterset on highway 169. The accident occurred at 2:40 a.m. this Wednesday.
Riding in the car with Baker at the time of the accident were his wife, and two children, 14-year-old Beverly and 18-month-old Raymond Wilfred Baker. The three were rushed to Memorial hospital in Winterset for treatment of shock.
Reports indicate that Mrs. Baker and the two children received no serious injuries, and the boy and girl were released from the hospital Wednesday morning.
Madison county sheriff Rex Rouse and Patrolman Jack Beaman, who investigated the accident, say it apparently was caused by icy conditions of the highway. The car was traveling south towards Winterset when the accident occurred.
In addition to his wife and two children, Mr. Baker is survived by two other daughters. The family has been living on a farm four miles south of Patterson.
