Thursday, August 24, 1995Dorothy Lea Hadley of Madrid, a native of Earlham, died of cancer Tuesday, Aug. 22, at her home at the age of 60. Graveside services will be held at a later date. The Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
Born near Earlham on Oct. 10, 1934, she was the daughter of Oren B. and Pearle (Gingry) Hadley. She attended Earlham School and received degrees from Drake University and the University of Wisconsin.
A professor of English at Iowa State University in Ames, Miss Hadley was well known as co-author of numerous young adult novels under the pen name of Hadley Irwin. Her 20-year collaboration with Ann Irwin began when they met as members of ISU's English department. Not only did they teach courses together and write together, but for years they spoke with public school students throughout the country and keynoted many English teachers' and librarians' professional associations.
Miss Hadley was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Survivors include her sister, Mildred H. Rich of Oskaloosa, and several nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorials be sent to the Lee Hadley Fellowship at Iowa State University or the Madrid Public Library.
