Ruth Follmer, Stanley

Ruth Fidilla Follmer, 94, of Stanley died Jan. 18, 2005 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison, Wis.

Funeral services were held Saturday Jan. 22, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein with the Rev. Jane Follmer Zekoff officiating. Burial was at Hazelton Cemetery.

Ruth Follmer was born Feb. 15, 1910 in Lincoln township, Madison County, to Ora and Ella I. (Kennedy) Macumber. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1928 and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1932, she also received the Double "I" Award from Iowa State University as the athlete who contributed the most to women's sports. Ruth taught home economics and was the girls' basketball coach at Stanley Consolidated High School from 1932 through 1937, and at West Union High School from 1937 to 1938. She returned to Stanley, teaching from January of 1957 to May of 1958. She married Carl Albert Follmer on Sept. 15, 1938, at the Macumber family homestead in Lincoln Township, Madison County. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein, United Methodist Women, Grace United Methodist Fireside Fellowship, Retired Teachers Association and AAUW.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Iris; and a brother, Avery.

She is survived by four daughters, Phyllis Byerly of Ft. Atkinson, Diane Follmer of St. Paul, Minn., Jane Follmer Zekoff of Lake Mills, Wis., and Judith Meyer of Jewell; and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.
