Raymond Samuel Flinn, Winterset

Services for Raymond Samuel Flinn, 80, former mayor of Earlham who died Sept. 29 of cancer at the Madison County Memorial Hospital, were held Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Byron W. Ayers officiating. Burial was in Perry.

Mr. Flinn was born March 24, 1902 in Polk County, the son of James Walter and Ellen Kitels Flinn. He married Bessie Keltner Apr. 13, 1923, and they farmed until 1934 when they moved to Adel and he was employed by Dallas County.

In 1952, they purchased a small country store near Greenfield and in 1958 sold this business and bought a grocery store in Macksburg. Due to failing health, in 1965, they moved to Earlham and in 1977 made their home in Winterset.

Mr. Flinn was a member of the Macksburg City Council for three years and was a treasurer of the Macksburg Telephone Co. He was mayor at Earlham for six years from 1968 to 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Ralph; a sister, Faye and two grandsons, Lewis Craig and Michael Duane Emery.

Survivors include his wife; their children and spouses, Alfred and Helen of Dallas Center; Walter and Rita of Adel; Irene and Bill Wilcox of Madrid; Pauline and Ed Gubser of Norfolk, Neb.; Marcella and Lou Emery of Parma, Idaho; Alice and Russ Hoffman of Perry; Helen and Bart Kerr of Greenfield; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; a sister, Leta Pritchard of Edmonds, Wash.

Raymond Samuel Flinn, 80, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 1982 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset of cancer.

He is the eldest son of James Walter and Ellen Kettles Flinn and was born on March 24, 1902 in Polk County, Iowa.

Raymond was united in marriage to Bessie Keltner on April 13, 1923. They farmed until 1934 when he was employed by Dallas County. In 1952 they purchased a small country store near Greenfield. In 1958 they sold this business and purchased a grocery store in Macksburg.

Due to failing health they sold the store and moved to Earlham in 1965 where they retired and in 1977 they relocated in Winterset.

While living in Macksburg he served three years on the city council and was treasurer of the Telephone Company. During the years 1968 through 1974 he was elected Mayor of Earlham.

At an early age he joined the Methodist Church and has been active in the churches in these communities.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie; their children and spouses; Alfred and Helen, Dallas Center; Walter and Rita, Adel; Irene and Bill Wilcox, Madrid; Pauline and Ed Gubser, Norfolk, Nebraska; Marcella and Lou Emery, Parma, Idaho; Alice and Russ Hoffman, Perry; Helen and Bart Kerr, Greenfield; 21 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren; a sister, Leta Prichard, Edsmond, Washington; several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Services were conducted Saturday, October 2, 1982 at the United Methodist church in Winterset with the Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Organist was Virginia Coughenour and soloist was Janet Pasco. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Ream, Dale Ham, Bruce Johnson, Ivyl Emehiser, Paul Mark, Corwin Bererlin, Levi Fisher. Active pallbearers were Charles Walston, Bob Schieb, Dick Wilcox, Robert Gubser, Paul D. Miner, Gus Baumeister. Interment was at Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, Iowa.
