2002Raymond V. Smith, 91, died of cancer Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Adel Acres Care Center in Adel. Services were held Monday, Sept. 9, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with burial at Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.
Mr. Smith was born July 6, 1911, in Murray, the son of Asa and Rosa McClure Smith. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1932 and married Pauline Addy on June 8, 1932, in Grant City, Mo. He had lived in Redfield, Adel, and Earlham before moving to Des Moines in 1942. He was a retired truck mechanic with Bruce Motor Freight Co. and an Army veteran of World War II, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists, Windsor Heights United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 682 in Altoona and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 738.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline; a daughter, Betty Gordon, of New Brighton, Minn.; a son, Gene, of Gladstone, Mo.; a sister, Wilma Wilson of Guthrie Center; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
