John Faust, 90, of Mount Ayr, died April 9, at the Ringgold County Hospital. He was born in Union County on Feb. 20, 1896 to Carl Edward and Hilma Hanson Faust. The family later moved to Madison County.
He was married to Ruth Linn on March 7, 1918 at Pitzer. They farmed until March 1, 1936 at which time he was employed at the Farmer's Cooperative in Winterset. During World War II he joined the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion and served in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the Navy be became the manager of the Mount Ayr elevator and later of the Iowa Grain Company until he retired.
Following his retirement, he was appointed Commissioner of Veterans Affairs of Ringgold County where he served for eighteen years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Mount Ayr; a daughter, Kathryn Chartrand of Mount Ayr; two sons, Claire of Mankato, Minn. and Howard of Chariton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr. Ringgold Post 172 of the American Legion conducted conducted military graveside rites.

MOUNT AYR—John Faust, 90, of Mount Ayr died Wednesday morning, April 9, 1986, at the Ringgold County Hospital following a long illness.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home here. The Revs. Ed Kail and Phil Kinton will officiate with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery here. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Ringgold County Ministerial Alliance. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Ringgold Post 172 of the American Legion.
Faust was born Feb. 20, 1896, in Creston to Carl and Hilma (nee Hanson) Faust. He married Ruth Linn March 7, 1918 in Pitzer. He was a World War II veteran, retired farmer and worked at grain elevators at Mount Ayr and Winterset. He also worked in Veterans Affairs Office in Ringgold County for 18 years.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Mount Ayr; a daughter, Kathryn Chartrand of Mount Myr; two sons, Claire of Mankato, Minn. and Howard of Chariton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

April 1986John Edward Faust was born on February 20, 1896 north of Creston, Iowa to Carl Edward and Hilma Hanson Faust. He received his education at a rural school in Union County and Highland Park Academy in Des Moines. His family lived on a farm in Union County and later in Madison County.
John was united in marriage to Ruth Linn on March 7, 1918. From this union three children were born. He farmed until March 1, 1936 at which time he was employed at the Farmers Cooperative in Winterset, Iowa. During World War II he joined the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion and served in the South Pacific until June 1945.
After his discharge from the Navy he became the manager of the Mount Ayr elevator and later was employed by the Iowa Grain Company until he retired. Following his retirement he was appointed Commissioner of Veterans Affairs of Ringgold County where he served for eighteen years.
Throughout his life John was active in his church and taught Sunday School classes for many years. After World War II he became a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked hard to promote the work of these organizations. John was also a member of the board of the Ringgold County Hospital.
With a long interest in agriculture, John spent much time and effort in helping to improve farming practices. Later in life he was much interested in the history of Ringgold County and took an active role in the promotion of the museum at Ellston, preserving historic cemeteries and training pioneer family histories. John always had an interest in art and did considerable painting after his retirement. John always had time for his family and to help and guide others in need.
John was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son Claire and wife Hazel of Mankato, Minn.; son Howard and wife Freeda of Chariton, Iowa; daughter Kathryn of Mount Ayr; five grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held April 11, 1986 from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home at Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Ed Kail and Rev. Phil Kinton. Music was provided by Mrs. Robert Thomas and Arlen Hughes.
Casketbearers were Jim Jones, David Irving, Jerald Walter, Danny Lutrick, Bill Anderson and Marshall Barker. Honorary pallbearers were Elmo Roe, Bill Rusk, Jim Bishop, Aden Stewart, Duane Johnson, Keith Lininger, Kenneth McGehee, Robert Erickson and Everett Reynolds. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
