Leona Louise Oaks, 92, of Winterset died July 12, 2002.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, at the Church of Christ in Earlham with Pastors Steve Allison and Neal Hanley officiating. Burial was at Dexter Cemetery.

Leona Oaks was born Sept. 15, 1909, in Dallas County to Albert Ray and Stella Etta (Skinner) Wetrick. She was a 1928 graduate of Dexter High School. On Feb. 7, 1931, she was united in marriage to Lyman Edgar Oaks in Adel. Following their marriage, they resided on a farm near Indianola. She and her husband had farmed in Warren, Dallas, Guthrie and Madison counties, later moving to Earlham. They also had served as surrogate parents to several boys from the Iowa Children's Home. Leona was a member of the Church of Christ in Earlham, Earlham Garden Club, Farm Bureau and United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, a brother and two boys she and her husband helped raise (Richard Bacon and Henry Gripenberg).

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Marquardt (husband Stanley) of Normal, Ill.; two sisters, Lillian Aldrich of Stuart and Mildred Hronek (husband James) of Omaha, Neb.; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
