Mary Evelyn Smith, 84, died of complications of heart failure July 19, 2002, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, at Early Chapel Church of rural Earlham with the Rev. Les Borsay officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery of rural Earlham.

Mary Smith was born May 4, 1918, in Madison County to Austin Albert and Eva Lena (Alexander) Woods. She attended country school during her younger years, later graduating from Earlham High School in 1936 and American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She married Dale E. Smith on April 4, 1940, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mary had worked as a secretary for Raymond Gillespie in the Iowa House and Senate and as a medical assistant. She also did secretarial work for the Earlham Care Program from 1968 to 1970, at which time she became the administrator. She retired 14 years later. She was a member of the Early Chapel Church and had been involved in the Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister and three brothers.

She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Eaton (husband Paul) of Gun Barrel City, Texas; a son, Jim Smith (wife Linda) of Earlham; a sister, Harriet Garman of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
