RUSSELL COMP, Winterset

Russell Stanley Comp, 86, died May 26, 2006, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

A memorial service was held today (Wednesday, May 31) at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Bobb Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and VFW Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Russell Comp was born June 22, 1919, in Madison County to George William and Ida Harriett (Wermersen) Comp. On June 7, 1942, he married Helen Cummins in Carthage, Mo. Russell had worked at Gambles Hardware Store in Winterset early in his life and retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance as a sales representative. A lifetime resident of Madison County, he was a member of the Winterset Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 184, First United Methodist Church and a local bridge card club. He also was a retired member of the Winterset Fire Department. During World War II, Russell was stationed in Egypt with the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Comp; two brothers, Howard Comp and George Comp; and a sister, Alice McDonald.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Winterset; two daughters, Valarie Kerns and Elecia Henke, both of Winterset; one son, Gary Allen of Winterset; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or the family.

Arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
