Services for Inez D. Townsend, 95, Winterset, who died Aug. 3, 1986, at the Bethesda Care Center, were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Bob Brite officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.
Born at Troy Mills, Iowa on Jan. 26, 1891, she was the daughter of Charles and Sean Jane Martin. She was married to John Thomas Townsend on April 19, 1911 at Dows.
Mrs. Townsend was a teacher and a homemaker and was queen of the 1973 Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. She had lived in Madison County since 1919, coming from Clarion. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Winterset.
She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls; operated Townsend Maytag Store; and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Madison County Antique Club, the 60 Plus Club and the Kitchen Band.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Esther Frank of Winterset; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Estell; a great-grandchild, four brothers and a sister.
