July 1999Allen Coulter Cairns, 81, of Earlham died of a stroke Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at Veterans Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held Saturday, July 24 at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham. Cremains will be buried at a later date.
Cairns was born in Hoover and lived in Albia, Waukee and Des Moines before moving to Earlham 47 years ago. He was a retired painter with Des Moines Painters Union and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one son, Jerry of Earlham; four daughters, Sarah Glasgow of Midway City, Calif., Janis Thompson of Grand Junction, Colo., Joyce Carr of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Judi Curran of Fallon, Nev.; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Isabella McDougal Cairns; his wife, Ellen; one son, John Arthur Cairns; one granddaughter, Rhonda Jo McDowell; and two brothers, James and John Cairns.
