Fred Dhabalt, Winterset

Fred David Dhabalt, 87, of Winterset, died June 18, 2004 at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 22, at Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Pastor George Thurman officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery with military rites performed by Earlham American Legion Post No. 158.

Fred Dhabalt was born Dec. 12, 1916 to Fred and Georgia (Coursoun) Dhablat of Jeffers, Minn. On Sept. 3, 1935, he married Lillian Acott in Indianola. While serving in the United States Army during World War II, he was awarded two Purple Hearts for injuries received in the invasion of France in the Black Forest area. Following his discharge from the service, Fred was employed as a tool and die maker for DICO Manufacturing in Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter, Colleen Palmer; and one grandson.

He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Love of Earlham; three sons, Fred Dhabalt Jr. and Roger Dhabalt, both of Des Moines, and Terry Dhabalt of Earlham; a brother, Jack Carron of Des Moines; a sister, Deloris Piper of Winston, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
