Dale Edwin Smith, 81, of Earlham died of a heart attack Friday, Nov. 17, 2000 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held Nov. 20 at Early Chapel Church in Earlham. Burial was in Penn Center Cemetery, rural Earlham.

Dale Smith was born Nov. 24, 1918 to Raymond and Grace Cade Smith in rural Madison County. He graduated from Earlham High School in 1936. On April 4, 1940 he married Mary Woods. He started a trucking company with his neighbor Merle Percy and hauled gravel from the nearby quarry for a few years; however, farming was his love.

He was a member of the Earlham Methodist Church, the Early Chapel Church. He was active in the church and held many offices. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Earlham until it closed. He was active in the pitch and bridge clubs in the area. He loved all kinds of sports.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith of Earlham; a daughter, Marilyn Eaton of Gun Barrel City, Texas; a son, Jim Smith of Earlham; a sister, Mabel Noland of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
