James Cushing, Van Meter

James Byron Cushing, 87, of Van Meter, died Sept. 2, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Van Meter United Methodist Church, with interment at Van Meter Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by McCalley Funeral Home in Adel.

James was born July 15, 1918 to Byron and Eva (Forret) Cushing in rural Adel. He graduated from Van Meter High School in 1937.

James, a retired farmer, was a member of the Greatest Generation. He served in the Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

James was a charter member of Van Meter American Legion Post 403 and a charter member of the Van Meter Saddle Club. He was involved with the Van Meter Community Club and Bob Feller Homecomings and the Van Meter Centennial, Bicentennial and Quasquicentennial celebrations. James served on the Booneville Farmers' Cooperative Board, Madison County Soil and Conservation Board and Dallas County Condemnation Board. He supported 4-H and the Madison County Fair.

James was an avid horse lover. And, one of his proudest moments was when he became an Iowa Trophy Deer Hunter.

James was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Mathias and Tom, and sisters, Helen Palmer and Ina Allen. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of 60 years; daughter Jean (Ed)Willard of Clive; son Jimmy of West Des Moines; granddaughter Christen (Chris) Norris and great-grandsons Jonathan and Aaron of Des Moines; granddaughter, Diane (Bob) Kenny and great-grandson Jack of Silverdale, Wash.; brother Jacob (Florence) of Adel; plus several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Van Meter United Methodist Church, Van Meter American Legion Post 403 or the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, 900 Polk Boulevard, Des Moines, IA 50312.

The family thanks the staff and friends at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center for the quality care they provided James during the past four months.
