Robert H. Maxwell died Thursday, Oct. 14, at Morningside Medi-Clinic in Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of 72. He was concluding a consultancy in Mozambique, assisting with the development of a college of agriculture, when he became ill. He traveled to Johannesburg where he was hospitalized on Sept. 18th and diagnosed with an aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of the Creative Arts College on the Evansdale campus of West Virginia Univeristy.

Bob was born on a farm near Earlham on Oct. 8, 1927, the son of Charles E. and Mildred Haworth Maxwell. After graduating from Earlham High School he attended Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. and completed his bachelor's degree at Iowa State University in 1950. He later completed an MS at ISU in 1964 and a PhD at Cornell University in 1970.

He and Betty Michener were married on Dec. 25, 1950, and Betty continues to live in Morgantown. They have four children, four children-in-law, and eight(soon to be nine) grandchildren: Steve and Susi Maxwell, Nick and Beck of Boulder, Colo.; Dan and Joyce Maxwell, Patrick and Clare of Nairobi, Kenya; Tim and Susanne Maxwell, Elliot, Sally, and Abby of Calgary, Alberta; and Kris and Dan Plubell and Katie of Kansas City, Mo.
