Mrs. Joe Cunningham Dies

Mrs. Joe Cunningham, who has been a resident of this county, for the past 55 years, died at her home, north of Patterson, last Thursday evening, March 19th. She had been ill with hardening of the arteries, last November, but recovered. She suffered a relapse on the 8th of March, however, and she gradually became worse. She was 81 years of age.

Mrs. Cunningham was formerly Margaret Rice, and she was born and raised in Kilkenney, Ireland. In 1875 she came to this country, to keep house for her cousin, the Rev. M. V. Rice, who was pastor of the St. Patrick’s church, in Lee township. Father Rice, formerly came to this town, to conduct (unreadable) Rice and Mr. Cunningham was solemnized in June, 1885. They were the parents of two children, Mary, who died at the age of eighteen months, and Mrs. Margaret Roach who died February 2, 1922. Mr. Cunningham survives her, as do their six grandchildren, and a sister, Miss Kate Rice, who had been making her home with the Cunninghams.

The Rev. Emmet Dugan, pastor of St. Patrick’s church, conducted her funeral services, at the church, Saturday, March 21st, at 10 o’clock, and burial was made in the church cemetery.

Those driving from here to attend the services included the following: Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Cunningham and children, Peter Jr., Dorothy and Kathryn, Mr. and Mrs. John Cunningham, Mrs. T. Walter Beam, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest J. McNamara, Mrs. P. M. McNamara and daughter, Miss Mary, Mr. and Mrs. James McNamara and sons, Miss Kate Hartley, Ed Hartley, Mrs. Mike Breen and daughter, Katherine, Harry Gaspari, Mr. and Mrs. James Monaghan, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Harrell, Mrs. Minnie Wilhelm and F. S. Hamilton. Mrs. Donald Kiplinger of Omaha, came to this county to attend the funeral services of her aunt, and the Des Moines people, who drove out for them were Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Kelleher, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Donahue, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Murphy, John Murphy and Miss Margaret Hanrahan.

Death of Wife of Prominent Madison County Farmer Occurs March 26

Mrs. Joseph Cunningham of Patterson who had been in ill health since December, died Thursday nigh of last week. Low mass was celebrated Saturday morning at ten o'clock at St. Patrick's church by the Rev. M.F. Dugan; burial was in the cemetery.

In December Mrs. Cunningham, who was 81, contracted pneumonia. Due to advanced age she never fully regained her health which had been undermined by complications of some years standing.

Mrs. Cunningham before her marriage was Margaret Rice. She came to the United States fifty-seven years ago from County Kilkenny, Ireland. Her brother, M.V. Rice, was pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset a number of years.

Her marriage to Joseph Cunningham occurred in 1885. Neither of their two children are living, a daughter, Mary, dying at the age of twenty months; the death of the other daughter, Mrs. M.J. Roach, occurred in 1922.

Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham made their first home on a farm south of Bevington. After the death about twenty-four years ago of John Cunningham, Mr. Cunningham's father, they moved to the old family house northeast of Patterson.

Harrrell, Miss Katie Hartley, E.D. Hartley, Frank Hamilton, Patrick Kirvin, J.C. Johnson, James McNamara, Frank McNamara, Mrs. Minnie Wilholm, Mr. and Mrs James Monaghan, all of Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. E.J Donahoue, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kelleher, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Murphy, John Murphy, Miss Margaret Hanrahan, of of Des Moines. Mrs. Anne Kiplinger
