Sheldon John Strong, 89, died Jan. 3, 1998 of a blood disorder in Des Moines. Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at the First Presbyterian Church in Earlham, with burial following in the Earlham Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Kuhn Funeral Home of Earlham.

Mr. Strong was born on Oct. 9, 1908 in Valley Junction to Charles and Mary Dillemon Strong. He moved to Earlham as a child to live with his paternal grandmother after his mother died. He went on to graduate from Earlham High School.

Mr. Strong married Ora Hutzell of Adel on May 1, 1932 in Maryville, Mo. Mr. Strong worked at the railroad depot and at the Earlham Feed Mill. He later became the manager at the Earlham Farmer's Co-op and worked there 38 years before retiring in 1970. Mr. Strong later moved to the Earlham Health Care Center.

Mr. Strong was very involved in the city of Earlham. He served on the Earlham City Council and was a member of the Earlham Library Board. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Earlham.

Mr. Strong is survived by one daughter, Mary Evelyn Johnson of Ankeny; one son, David Strong of Lakewood, Colo.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Strong was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; three sisters, Margaret Davis, Golda Shear and Jewel Strong; one brother, William Strong; and one great-grandson.
