Virgil H. Criss, rural Afton

Services for Virgil H. Criss, 66, rural Afton, who died April 14 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, were held Tuesday, April 18, at the United Methodist Church in Lorimor with the Rev. Larry Hamilton and Pastor Dick Kaiser of the Afton Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial was at the Lorimor Cemetery.

Born Dec. 13, 1922, at Confidence, Iowa, he was the son of Howard and Flossie Barr Criss. He was married Sept. 11, 1970 in Des Moines to Lois McKinnie.

Mr. Criss was a lifetime resident of the Lorimor area and longtime operator of Criss Grocery Store at Lorimor. He was a member of the Lorimor Lions Club, Fern Lodge No 558 AF & AM, Lorimor; Fred N. Davis American Legion Post No. 96, Lorimor; and Theodore J. Martens Post No. 1797 VFW, Creston. Mr. Criss was a World War II Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Edward and wife Kylene of Lorimor, Skyler and wife Donna of Frankfurt, Germany, Wayne Carlson and wife Suzanne of Afton and Terry Carlson and wife Kellie of Pea Ridge, Ark.; daughters, Mary Oxley and husband Kenneth of Granger; Juanita Strawn of Mitchellville, and Denise Wetzel and husband Steven of Lincoln, Neb.; brothers, Wayne of San Jose, Calif., and Earl of Placerville, Calif.; a sister JoAnne Stout of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Janice in 1967, and a daughter, Susan.
