Nancy Anne Hutchins

Nancy Anne McManus was born in Eastern Pennsylvania on April 21, 1837. She passed from this life and to her eternal reward on Monday, August 17, 1931, at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 27 days.

Mrs. Hutchins left Pennsylvania at the age of 10. She came to Clayton county, Iowa. Here she married John Hutchins on December 30, 1856. To this union were born ten children. Mr. Hutchins and five of the children preceded her in death.

They lived in Clayton county for a few years where most of the children were born. They then moved to Madison county about the year 1867. Mr. Hutchins passed away on October 28, 1861. Mrs. Hutchins moved to Van Meter in 1903 where she has since made her home. During the last few years, however, she had made quite a number of trips to California and Colorado where she spent quite a bit of her time in visiting her children.

Mrs. Hutchins united with the Methodist church in her early life and at the time of her death, she was a member of the Fairview church. For many years, she attended church and was an active member of the congregation which met at what was known as the Center school house in Jefferson township, Madison county. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge in Van Meter.

The children who preceded her in death are Naoma, who died at the age of four years; Sarah Elizabeth Milligan, who died seven years ago at the age of sixty-five; Sidney S. who passed away in 1904 at the age of forty-three years; Addie Hutchins Manbeck, who passed away five years ago at the age of sixty-four; Louis Hutchins Williams, who passed away three years ago at the age of fifty-eight years.

She leaves to mourn her loss, five children: Arthur C. of Des Moines; Lewis Joe of Lamar, Colorado; Charles B. of La Junta, Colorado; Mary Hutchins Howell of Van Meter; and Leo Hutchins McLain of Lamar, Colorado. She also leaves thirty-four grandchildren; forty great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Besides these, there are a host of other relatives and friends who will mourn her loss.

The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Van Meter with Rev. S. C. Peterson in charge, assisted by the Rev. Elliot. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery south of DeSoto.
